I am interestrd in getting a sony DCR-HC96 but is this like a digital camera where you hook it up to the computer and you can just put the videos on? Also someone is selling this camera used for $ 250. Is this a fair deal or a bargain or what? Would you highly recommend I buy it if I am looking for a nice video comera? Thanks!

The Sony DCR-HC96 is a great consumer-grade, entry level, standard definition camcorder. It records DV format (“Digital Video”) to miniDV tape. To get the video from the digital tape to the computer, connect a firewire cable (not USB) to the camcorder’s DV port (not USB) and the computer’s firewire port (not USB). Put the camcorder into Play/Edit mode, and “Import” or Capture the video. I *think* it also has a built-in infrared illuminator so you can capture monochrome video under zero-visible-light conditions. And it also has AV-in or pass-through which most camcorders in the price range do not have.
If your computer has no firewire port, or no way to add one, then you need to connect the camcorder’s AV cable to an “analog/digital converter”. Roxio and Elgato make decent ones – there are lots of others. With is A/D converter, you can get lower resolution video (it has to convert to analog then back to digital when it hits the A/D converter and goes over USB into the computer.
Firewire, DV, i.LINK and IEEE1394 are all the same thing. They are not USB. USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things do not work.
Is the HC96 a good camcorder for you? We have no idea. If your computer has no firewire port, we don’t know if you can add one or if you have to get the analog/digital converter. It would be a fince camcorder for me… my computers all have a firewire port.
Also, we don’t know how much the HC96 you are looking at has been used. If it has low hours and basically not used much, then it is a good deal. If it has been used a lot or abused, then not such a good deal.
